Signs of poor gut health in pets

Thursday 28 July 2022
No system is more important in pets than the digestive system. Poor dog gut health can lead to many problems that can’t be seen, like low-grade leaky gut.  A healthy gut means a healthy gut microbiome. The gut microbiome is heavily influenced by diet, stress, and the environment.

Poor gut health is also the most common reason dogs and cats end up sick at the local veterinary clinic.

The obvious signs of poor gut health are diarrhoea and vomiting. Diarrhoea can be acute or sudden, intermittent or chronic, and long-term diarrhoea for some pets.

While the obvious signs are weight loss and poor energy, there are more subtle signs of gut health issues such as poor skin conditions or depressed behaviour.

A healthy gut is like a sponge; it will absorb all the nutrients needed for metabolic health. However, when there is low-grade inflammation, it can affect health and wellbeing. The leaky gut syndrome is a well-known syndrome where the lining of the intestine can be inflamed. The postbiotics in Precision Microbes liquid-like short chain fatty acids are essential to reduce the risk of this leaky gut.

Hippocrates once said that all disease begins in the gut. It can be said that all health should start in the gut. Avoiding digestive upsets is key to a happy and healthy pet.

Proper veterinary advice and intervention

With many causes of diarrhoea and vomiting, a veterinary intervention must be sought. For example, fluid loss and rapid metabolic depression with acute diarrhoea and vomiting can be seen. In contrast, chronic diarrhoea cases require careful investigation to find the cause of the problem.

Everyday things are common, so parasites or infectious causes of diarrhoea must be ruled out in dogs and cats. In more complex cases, it can be allergies or underlying metabolic conditions.

The gut microbiome

A healthy gut requires a healthy gut microbiome. The gut microbiome is the billions of beneficial microbes that help aid digestion, regulate immune function, and compete with harmful pathogens.  With diarrhoea, there is a disruption to the pet's gut flora which is often called dysbiosis. With chronic diarrhoea, changes to the gut microbiome can be seen, which will significantly impact digestive health and immunity.

It must be remembered that 70% of dog's and cat's immune cells are gut-based. Therefore, for long-term health, gut health should be optimised. When probiotics are used, they are helping to mimic the role of these good bacteria in the gut. Precision Microbes is unique with a live liquid probiotic with all its postbiotics.

Helping stabilise the acute case

When diarrhoea is seen in dogs and cats, it is often caused by dysbiosis or a shift in the normal gut flora to more harmful pathogens.

For acute diarrhoea, Precision Microbes is a licensed gut stabiliser. It contains the probiotic Enterococcus Faecium NCIMB10415. Gut stabilisation means helping inflamed gut tissue's physical recovery.

Precision Microbes is a unique liquid probiotic and postbiotic. The postbiotics make it a fast-acting gut stabiliser because the postbiotics are essential when we need biological repair in the damaged gut tissue or lining of pet intestines.

Chronic gut health issues and probiotics

No doubt chronic inflammatory conditions in pets' digestive tracts are a problem for them. Even low-grade or intermittent diarrhoea can be uncomfortable and set them back.

With an unhealthy gut, it must also be remembered that it can be painful. In addition, new studies show how a link between the gut and the brain may affect behaviour in animals and humans.

So along with veterinary assessments and dietary changes, Precision Microbe's unique liquid probiotic and postbiotic for pets can help alleviate chronic issues.

Precision Microbes is designed to be given to both cats and dogs in feed daily. It is highly palatable, and the unique live bacteria that are acid adapted with all their postbiotics get to where they need to be in the gut. Our products are entirely natural, organic, and developed from a deep understanding of how nature works biologically.

Remember, the gut is like a sponge, and we can see huge benefits when it's optimally performing. Precision Microbes customers talk about the difference in health, vitality, and coat condition in their pets on long-term usage.
