In a commercial pig production system, the successful introduction of gilts into a breeding herd is a key component of overall productivity. Gilts often stay in the gilt pool for three to four estrous cycles before they are detected in estrus therefore increasing space requirement and feed cost.

The hormonal synchronisation of estrus is a management strategy that facilitates the earlier introduction of breeding-eligible females into the breeding herd, therefore reducing the gilt pool. An 18-day treatment regimen with Interchem’s altrenogest product will bring your mature gilts into heat within 3 – 6 days of completion. For successful use of Interchem’s altrenogest product, it is important to adhere to the ‘Golden Rules’ listed below: 

     1. Administer the product orally for 18 consecutive days 
     2. Administer 5ml per gilt per day 
     3. Administer at the same time every day (+/- 15 minutes) 
     4. Avoid stress during the 18 days of treatment 
     5. No boar contact during the 18 days of treatment

The correct use of this product will lead to several on-farm benefits such as less labour (checking heats), weekly planning (number of gilts needed), reduced gilt pool leading to increased space, less feed and less vaccination.
