Improving biosecurity on your unit
The prevention of infectious diseases in pigs is important for both animal welfare and economic productivity. Biosecurity is the set of practical measures taken to limit the spread of infectious disease. A thorough and effective biosecurity programme is essential for the control and elimination of viral, bacterial and fungal micro-organisms, that can result in poor performance and mortality of the herd. As well as direct pig to pig contact, other methods that can spread diseases include:

1. Airborne e.g. windborne spread from neighbouring farms
2. Mechanical e.g. vehicles, machinery and equipment
3. People, clothing, footwear
4. Birds, rats, mice, flies
5. Contaminated feed, water, semen, bedding

Hygiene, cleaning and disinfection are an integral part of any biosecurity programme. The use of Omnicide has been proven to be an effective tool in biosecurity programmes. Omnicide is a broad-spectrum animal health disinfectant which can eradicate viruses, bacteria, fungi and mould.

Biosecurity of drinking water for animals is also an important element in any comprehensive biosecurity strategy. Therefore, the bacteriological quality of the water should be checked regularly while water systems, tanks and pipes should be cleaned and disinfected as biofilm can be a source of bacteria for pigs. Huwa-San is a unique, multipurpose, highly effective disinfectant and biocide based on silver stabilised hydrogen peroxide that can be used for water disinfection. It is an effective bactericide, fungicide, viricide, and algaecide. It has passed a whole range of EN tests to prove it’s efficacy. The swine team at Interchem can carry out water testing to determine the quality of the water throughout the unit and help you put a plan in place to improve the quality of the water on your farm, which will in turn improve the health and performance of the pigs on your unit.
