Livestock Vaccination Option
The unique vaccine COXEVAC® is available in Ireland from veterinarians.
COXEVAC® is a phase one inactivated vaccine against Coxiella burnetii. Dose is 2ml for goats and 4 ml for cattle given under the skin. The primary course is 2 injections given 3 weeks apart.
COXEVAC® is a unique vaccine containing ultra-purified phase I C. burnetii resulting in an optimal immune response. A vaccine protocol needs to be implemented over at least 3 years to maximally reduce shedding and therefore environmental contamination and disease.
In goats vaccination:
Reduces abortion rate – in one study the abortion rate was reduced from 75% to 6%29.
Reduces the duration of shedding in milk, faeces and vaginal mucus29.
In cattle vaccination:
Reduces the risk of abortion by 30%10.
Reduces the risk of animals becoming shedders:
- Heifers vaccinated pre-service were 5 x less likely to become shedders30.
- Over 3 years significantly reduced the number of animals shedding31.
Reduces the environmental burden31.
Reduces the bacterial load across the herd32.
COXEVAC®
COXEVAC® inactivated Coxiella burnetti, strain Nine Mile ≥72 QF Unit*/ml. Indications: Cattle: For the active immunisation of cattle to lower the risk for non-infected animals vaccinated when nonpregnant to become shedder (5 times lower probability in comparison with animals receiving a placebo), and to reduce shedding of Coxiella burnetii in these animals via milk and vaginal mucus. Goats: For the active immunisation of goats to reduce abortion caused by Coxiella burnetii and to reduce shedding of the organism via milk, vaginal mucus, faeces and placenta.
Please refer to the product packaging and leaflets for information about side effects, precautions, warnings and contra-indications. Further information can be found on the SPCs and datasheets. LEGAL CATEGORY: IE POM. Use medicines responsibly.

Serological data available demonstrates an immunological response from day 14 post-vaccination. Goats: For the active immunisation of goats to reduce abortion caused by Coxiella burnetii and to reduce shedding of the organism via milk, vaginal mucus, faeces and placenta.
